Two Mercury Prize Nominations for Sony Music
The nominations for the 2013 Mercury Music Prize were announced today and two Sony Music acts feature among the 12 artists competing in the annual album of the year competition.
‘The Next Day’, David Bowie’s 24th studio album and the first he has released in 10 years, has been nominated for the prize. The album was recorded in New York with co-producer Tony Visconti. It reached number one when released by RCA in March 2013 and features the top 10 single ‘Where Are We Now?’
Also nominated is ‘Sing to the Moon’, the debut album by Laura Mvula. The top 10 album, which features the singles ‘She’, ‘Green Garden’ and ‘That’s Alright’, was released by RCA in March 2013.
The Mercury Music Prize judging panel described 2013 as:
“A significant year for musical creativity and excellence.
This year’s shortlist celebrates a fascinating year for British and Irish music, marked by a wonderful range of musical voices – urgent, reflective, upbeat and tender, acoustic and electronic, and all with something intriguing to say.”
The Barclaycard Mercury Prize is designed to promote the best of UK and Irish music and the artists that produce it. The main objectives of the Mercury Prize are to provide a snapshot of the year in music, to encourage debate and discussion about music, and to help introduce new albums from a variety of musical genres to a wider audience. The first Mercury Prize took place in 1992.
