Sony Music dominates BRIT Awards’ nominations with record-equalling success
On Saturday, it was announced that Sony Music UK have secured 23 nominations for this year’s BRIT Awards – equalling the company’s most successful year ever.
With nine nominations, RCA has the most of any UK record label; Columbia and Syco Music have both secured six whilst Insanity and Relentless have one each. The only previous occasion in which Sony Music has secured as many nominations was in 2005. Overall 16 different Sony Music artists have been nominated this year, which is nine more than in 2016.
Little Mix (Syco Music) has secured the joint most nominations with three – for British Group, British Single and British Artist Video Of The Year. The group will also perform at next month’s ceremony.
The late David Bowie’s critically acclaimed No.1 album Blackstar (RCA) is nominated for the coveted MasterCard British Album Of The Year and he is also short-listed for British Male Solo Artist.
Craig David (Insanity) is also nominated for British Male Solo Artist. Meanwhile, NAO (RCA) is nominated for British Female Solo Artist. Having already secured the Critics’ Choice award last month, Rag’n’Bone Man (Columbia) is also short-listed for British Breakthrough Act.
Sony Music dominates the British Single and British Video categories, with five nominations in each. Calvin Harris (Columbia), ZAYN (RCA), James Arthur and Little Mix (both Syco Music) are all nominated in both categories whilst Alan Walker (Relentless) is short-listed for British Single and One Direction (Syco Music) are nominated for British Artist Video Of The Year. This is One Direction’s ninth nomination and they have also won six BRIT Awards to date. Additionally, Black Butter’s Zara Larsson also features in the nominations.
Sony Music also has six nominations in the international categories. Beyoncé (RCA), Sia (RCA) and Solange (RCA) are all short-listed for International Female Solo Artist whilst A Tribe Called Quest (RCA) and Kings of Leon (Columbia) are nominated for International Group. In addition, the late Leonard Cohen (Columbia) – who passed away in November shortly after the release of his final album – is nominated in the British Male Solo Artist category.
Sony Music UK has already secured two BRITs for this year. Rag’n’Bone Man has been named Critics’ Choice and Robbie Williams (Columbia) is the BRITS Icon.
